Best Actor or Lifetime Achievement Award?

With the news of Demi Moore getting an Oscar nomination for her role in The Substance, it begs the question of if these performances are really Oscar-worthy or is it more like a lifetime achievement award? It seems like the industry likes to give-in and award Hollywood veterans for playing the long game rather than the awarding based on the actual merit of their performances. I think Demi is great in The Substance and she will likely take home the Oscar—but did she really out-act all of the other nominees or is this the Academy's way of saying thank you for your years of service? Other examples of this include Brendan Fraser in The Whale, Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer, Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All At Once, and even Leonardo DiCaprio winning for The Revenant (should have been for Gilbert Grape, or Catch Me If You Can, or Wolf of Wall Street, etc, etc). Do you agree? Is it a game of politics, or are these truly outstanding performances?

Ishika Banerjee: Award shows especially like the Oscar’s will always play a game of politics. If it was up to me I’d base it off merit and a mix of viewers choice. If an actress/actor is getting it only because it’s long overdue, I feel like it negates the entire purpose o their career like they only acted to get this one award. There’s countless directors and actors who are going on to make tremendous films without ever winning an Oscar. I like Demi Moore but her acting in the substance and life time career achievements shouldn’t grant her the award. But Oscar’s never usually does what you should either so who cares. the Oscar’s also never gives the award to anyone younger than 30 from what I’ve observed because I don’t think they appreciate actors in their 20s as much as high stakes established actors.

‘The Substance’, an open debate.

The Substance, a popular film directed by Coralie Fargeat, was my 2024 WTF cinema moment. It's by no means a bad movie, but if one takes the time to reflect on it and replays everything that occurs in their mind a few times, the plot appears to be at least questionable. I want to start a debate on two different topics: the film's deep critique and a more technical one regarding a significant narrative problem. The primary problem with the critique is not the critique per se, but rather the manne

Indie Corner: There’s a faint feminist message buried in there somewhere, but it's more of a light breeze than a wind of change. Instead of seizing the chance to break free from the patriarchy, our heroine just seeks more followers and tighter skin. Can we have a reboot of feminism with actual empowerment, please?

"The Substance: The Promise of Perfection and its Dark Side"

If you’re interested in movies that combine science fiction, body horror and social criticism, "The Substance" is just what you need! The story immerses us in the life of a famous actress, Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Moore) who, on her very fiftieth birthday, is fired from her job by Harvey (Denis Quaid), the head of the television studio where she works. Harvey decides to fire her, and she considers it a product whose expiration date has come to an end. He is an extremely unpleasant, repulsive

“Here”, the charm of exploring life in the flutter of the hummingbird.

Would you like to travel in time? Let’s do it through "Here" (2024). Do you suspect that some of the protagonists have taken "The Substance"? No, keep calm. "Here" uses a generative AI technology resource, Metaphysic Live, to reduce the age of actors in real time. Once this point is clarified, let’s give free rein to nostalgia and enjoy without reservation this controversial and unique cinematographic proposal. The plot, from its deep simplicity, finds in everyday life the way to eternalize bein

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood: The comedy of the stars of the past, present and future.

You may read the premise of this article being a complete cult movie buff and ask yourself, How can you consider "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" an underrated comedy when everyone else saw it? To which I will answer you with a different approach than the one you have about this movie. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I call it an underrated comedy beyond its own humor (which is very good), but for its great social impact by bringing out what would be the new generation of actresses in the current

Matthew Alan Schmidt: One of the most cathartic endings to a movie of all time. Considering how worried everyone was about an eventual portrayal of this tragedy, I think Tarantino really nailed it with about as much grace as anyone could have asked for, like you said. It really reinforces the "fairy tale" aspect alluded by the title. It's right up there with Basterds as my favourite Tarantino, and continues to age better with every re-watch.

OSCARS 2025 : The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I. Introduction: Setting the Stage for the 2025 Oscars As we know, The Oscars are one of the most important events in cinema, the moment for us cinephiles live for the nominations, the speeches, and the heated debates that follow. This year, more than ever, it seems the Academy's selections haven't completely reflected the audience's preferences. We often recognize the genuine artistry, passion, and films that genuinely connect with viewers. The 2025 awards season has highlighted numerous instan

The Substance | A Bold Bubblegum Film

“The Substance” (2024) is a bold, audacious, and unapologetically direct film that ditches the subtlety often used by other filmmakers to explore themes of beauty, identity, and modern femininity. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, this movie creates a bubblegum-colored horror show where nothing is left to interpret. It is a visceral experience that challenges both aesthetic and societal standards head-on, unapologetically confronting the hellish pressures of modern beauty. The film centers on Elisabe

Why is The Brutalist So Pretentious?

The Brutalist (2024) is one of those films that demands to be noticed, and it does so with a flair that borders on the absurd. From its choice of VistaVision cameras to its projection in 70mm, complete with a grand overture and intermission, this film unapologetically wears its pretensions like a badge of honor. It’s big. It’s bold. It’s brash. But does that make it a masterpiece, or just a self-indulgent exercise in cinematic excess? The answer is complicated, but one thing is certain: The Brut

Lucas Friesen: Call me crazy, but I think a director benefits from having a massive ego. It helps to believe you can do everything the way you want to do it. I would rather have an egotistical director go for a homerun and fail than a meek director make something that he thinks will appeal to the most ppl. And I still don't know how they made this movie on only $10M. Did Adrien Brody work for free?

Demi Moore, Let Yourself Be Mad

Demi Moore spent the entire awards season playing nice, showing nothing but gratitude for an industry that had once discarded her, only to welcome her back with cautious, conditional arms. She had it all—the career resurgence, the compelling performance in The Substance, the overdue narrative, the industry respect—but when the name in the envelope wasn’t hers but Mikey Madison’s, the shock on her face was unmistakable. Of course, she recovered quickly. Years in Hollywood teach you how to mask di

marvelousmars: I love how you wrote this, especially how you focused on the fact that the injustice was less that she didn't win and more that she was expected to act like everything was perfect. I hadn't thought about it before, but now I hope she gave herself the chance to really feel the emotions of the loss, just like you.

The Substance: Must Women Become Monsters to Defy the Male Gaze?

The Substance might be the most thought-provoking film I've seen this year. Even a week after watching it, I'm still trying to make sense of all the complex emotions it stirred and figure out why it left me feeling so conflicted. I have been increasingly anticipating the film ever since The Substance premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and received reviews calling it "shocking" and "breathtaking". As a fan of horror, body horror is something irresistible for me, so I really expected The S

Beforehand, I do want to clarify that I respect each and every single person that was part of the cast and crew of this movie. Filmmaking is not an easy task, let alone making a movie as ambitious as this one. If you have been to the movies lately, I bet you have seen (or at least heard of) the new movie by Coralie Fargeat, “The Substance’”; a body horror movie that follows the story of a famous actress named Elizabeth Spark (played by Demi Moore), who is facing the hard reality that many celebr

Deadpool and Wolverine: the end of creativity and the era of Meta Blockbusters

Why are villains looked over their shoulder, as the only ones who are wrong in the story? In Deadpool's figure, we can see all the sarcasm present in the character's speeches, especially in each statement or phrase said in the film, but in everyday life he ends up being the only one who has the courage to admit what he feels. Thus, the entire narrative of the film begins with the recruitment of the character, after he is almost captured at the beginning of the film, and violates the remains of t

Body Horror and Ambition Collide in The Substance

It's not every day that I’m this affected by a horror movie. Especially one that combines body horror with such a raw reflection on our society's expectations of perfection and youth. The Substance wastes no time in bringing discomfort to the public, but what took me most by surprise was how it plays with human ambition. Have you ever had that feeling when taking a look in the mirror and thinking how wonderful it would be if time just stopped? That almost universal desire to stay young, to feel

The Substance: It's Time to Desexualize Your Brain

Elisabeth, lying on the ground, has used The Substance due to age anxiety. This drug enables her to split off a younger version of herself—Sue, who is wearing a dark robe with a gold dragon pattern. Through a single room, two women, and a film set, The Substance tells its audience an ancient yet contemporary story: "When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." What Scares Me Most in 'The Substance' Isn't Monstro Elisasue, But...

After watching The Substance, I sat in silence for a long, long time. Part of it was physical discomfort—I needed time to calm down. Honestly, there were several moments during the film when I almost felt like vomiting, and I really shouldn’t have eaten a chicken burger right before watching. The other part was psychological exhaustion. Yes, disgust and fatigue—these are the emotions that this film, billed as the most feminist movie of 2024, left me with as a woman. There was an indescribable, a

The Substance, movie of the year?

The Substance is without a doubt, my top movie of the year. It blends two of my favorite things—foreign cinema and horror—with shocking, thought-provoking imagery. Watching it in the cinema was an unforgettable experience, and I was thrilled to revisit it later on streaming. The film stands out for how it tackles complex themes like appearances, body dysmorphia, self-esteem, and both women's and universal human issues. Its mix of horror and science fiction, another favorite genre of mine, added to its appeal. What surprised me most was realizing it was directed by Coralie Fargeat, who I first discovered through her earlier works like Revenge and her short film, Reality +. I loved seeing her evolve from indie art cinema into a major cultural force. Another standout this year was Kinds of Kindness, a similarly shocking and memorable film, but The Substance edges it out for its depth and impact.

Lucas Friesen: I've heard polarizing opinions about this movie. After all, the top article in the WTF writing challenge on Peliplat is about The Substance. I can't wait to watch it myself!
