Kira, a villain disguised as a hero

In 2003, Tsugumi Ōba (writer) and Takeshi Obata (drawer), created one of the best pop culture titles in history. Death Note was a phenomenal manga, which was adapted into a phenomenal anime. The plot follows young student Light Yagami, who finds the Death Note, a magical notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it. He decides to use it to play God and purge the world from criminals. After more than 20 years since its creation, this story is still relevant. And the debate about whom

Exhuma: Unearth Bone-Chilling Terror from the Underworld

Exhuma presents a refreshing departure: Korean folklore, Chinese traditions, Japanese legends, and a myriad of religious symbols infuse this South Korean domestic box office sensation with both antiquity and contemporaneity. Against the backdrop of cross-cultural currents, it exudes an enchanting aura of Eastern mystique. Shaman Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and her close aide Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun, The Glory) are entrusted to investigate the curious occurrences surrounding the newborn of the affluent Pa

Memories of Murder: A Modern Noir Masterpiece

During the black hole period between Christmas and New Year's where time is an illusion, I was searching for a film to watch to fill the time while cozied up on the couch. That’s when I spotted the neo-noir crime thriller Memories of Murder (2003), directed by the master Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho. Why You Should Leave Your Hometown

It's the holidays and you just returned home to see the wonderful family that raised you to be the perfect, moral citizen you are. They greet you at the door with hugs and kisses, curious about your life events and proud of your accomplishments. You end the night sleeping peacefully in your fitted comforter as the cicadas outs

Bob Woolsey: I grew up in a town of 1200 people and everyone knew everyone's business. Not only that, but they knew your ancestor's business too. I battle with the nostalgia of growing up in what was a pretty idyllic setting by most accounts, and the realities of how small towns can create small minds in a lot of ways.

Every once in a while, an unexpected gem pops up, and in the late summer of 2001 that happened to arise for me and brought me to the next addition to my Filmscapes collection of Must-Watch Movies. It began with a premise that was purely enchanting - an old, Gothic mansion with a beautiful blonde bombshell in the main role delivered by none other than Nicole Kidman, I was enthralled with the setting and eerie ambiance that was built from the moment I watched the trailer. When I went to see the mo
