'The Count of Monte-Cristo', the best adaptation of Alexandre Dumas?

The Count of Monte-Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo - Matthieu Delaporte, Alexandre de La Patellière - 2024) is the eponymous adaptation of one of the greatest books of all time by the French novelist Alexandre Dumas, who is also recognized for another widely recognized work, The Three Musketeers. The plot is well-known and one of the greatest revenge stories in fiction: the young Edmond Dantès is about to be promoted to captain, which will allow him to marry the love of his life, a gorgeous hig

Why You Should Leave Your Hometown

It's the holidays and you just returned home to see the wonderful family that raised you to be the perfect, moral citizen you are. They greet you at the door with hugs and kisses, curious about your life events and proud of your accomplishments. You eat a lovely dinner prepared by your mother—that definitely isn't too salty—and enjoy a variety of games with your relatives and siblings that don't end up in a fight. You end the night sleeping peacefully in your fitted comforter as the cicadas outs

Bob Woolsey: I grew up in a town of 1200 people and everyone knew everyone's business. Not only that, but they knew your ancestor's business too. I battle with the nostalgia of growing up in what was a pretty idyllic setting by most accounts, and the realities of how small towns can create small minds in a lot of ways.

‘Conclave’: Hidden Politics Behind Sacred Walls

“Conclave” is a suspense film centered on the Vatican’s papal election, though its plot could just as easily be transposed onto a U.S. presidential race. Adapted from British author Robert Harris’s 2016 novel of the same name, the film benefits from meticulously crafted sets and costumes, as well as director Edward Berger ’s careful orchestration of narrative twists and turns. Beyond delivering a gripping story filled with intrigue and secrecy, the film reinforces the notion that politics is pre

Secret Emotions and Ayahuasca Only Belong to ‘Queer’

For starters, here’s an overview: “Queer” is definitely not a film I can appreciate, and it even gave me a terrible viewing experience, which explains my low rating for it. However, it could very well be a good film, because “Queer” might actually be very queer. Still of “Queer” A good film that I don’t like? Sounds contradictory, right? But this phenomenon has already appeared early on in my film-watching journey, especially when I first started watching master films with a learning purpose. Ba

Exploring Corrientes Through Carnival and Spy Cinema

Every February to early March, in the heart of summer, the northern Argentine city of Corrientes hosts a grand carnival. Dazzling feathered costumes, bizarrely shaped parade floats, and horse-drawn carriages, all accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Chamamé bands, proudly parade through the streets on 10 different nights. These festivities take place in various corners of the city and surrounding towns, showcasing the beauty and flair of each participant. Carnival scene in Corrientes I visited t

Examining ‘Pedro Páramo’ Before ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’

Examining ‘Pedro Páramo’ Before ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ The novella “Pedro Páramo” by the magical realism pioneer Juan Rulfo, directly inspired Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece, “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Recently, Netflix released a film adaptation of “Pedro Páramo,” premiering over a month before the series adaptation of “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” This film ambitiously weaves together a labyrinth of life, death, memory, and shifting narrators. Juan Rulfo and his masterp
