Paradox between bad and worse.

A low budget is no excuse... With the false promise of being a necessary addition to the board of great disruptive works like Divergent and The Maze Runner, I was seduced by my insatiable search for films that allow me to continue spinning the development of analyses on the themes of the mind, personality, and the most intrinsic human realities.... so when I stumbled upon such a review, and a so connected to my scientific side tittle, my inner little hen screamed “Eureka” pushing me to see it, c

What Kind of an American are You, Civil War, 2024

What Kind of an American are You? In Alex Garland's Civil War (2024), the U.S. is plunged into an internal war between a dictatorial president clinging to power, and a group of states that have decided to rebel against tyranny. To avoid pointing the finger if they are Republicans or Democrats, the leaders of the rebel alliance are two states - Texas and California - that have historically elected governors from one side or the other. Perhaps not the most credible detail in the story, but Garland

Ishika Banerjee: Great article :) Another thing that was so bizzare but also capitvating about this scene was Jesse Plemons glasses was a tinted shade of red, making everything around him including the people and blood washed out in red. Probably adds some numbness to his actions.

Companion Made Me Question Everything

Companion is overrated. With a 94% critics score and 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, I realize my opinion for this movie is in the minority. Peliplat keeps it a bit more real, rating the movie a 7.4, but even that seems too high. I'm surprised to see such high praise and the audience flocking to the theatre, despite the movie having a first-time director and a cast made up of relative newcomers. To me, the movie had no clear point, and a social commentary that is neither accurate nor enti

MICKEY 17: A Satire About American Capitalism

'Are You Afraid To Die?' This might be one of the oldest and deepest philosophical questions and Mickey 17 delivers triggering response; One that is darkly comedic and existentially horrifying. At first glance, the film looks like another sci-fi survival story. But this is Bong Joon Ho , the Film Director who has spent his entire careerr exposing the myth of meritocracy and the cruelty of capitalism. A great example of this is it’s the class juxtapositions of Parasite and the environmental activ

Ishika Banerjee: I totally understand your critique and where it's coming from, but this movie felt too plain to me. It follows the same plot points, character arcs, and themes as any "eat the rich" critique of American capitalism, without taking them in an interesting direction. We already know that slavery is bad, cloning is problematic, and the rich are terrible. I was disappointed that the film didn’t bring any nuance to these ideas, unlike how Joon did with Parasite.

The Pain of Progress: Why Crimes of the Future Still Cuts Deep in 2024

Though it premiered in 2022, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future feels eerily more relevant today. As we continue to face worsening environmental crises, groundbreaking advancements in biotechnology, and intensifying cultural divisions, this dystopian masterpiece serves as both a cautionary tale and a dark meditation on humanity’s future. In Cronenberg’s imagined world, the human species has evolved—or devolved—past its natural boundaries. Physical pain is a thing of the past, and with it, h

Star Trek IV is a Whale of a Comedy

When you think Star Trek, I know you think gut-busting laughter. What’s that? No, you don’t? Well, whether you’re aware of it or not, comedy has always been part of Star Trek. From the very first episodes of the show, the comedic goldmine that was the dynamic between Kirk, McCoy, and Spock was evident. Episodes routinely ended with light barbs traded between them. Not to mention the comically gifted James Doohan’s performance as Scotty. Sure, he beams people up, but he also cracks the audience u

Mickey 17 Has No Sauce

How many forgettable things can you put in a movie? It felt like Bong Joon Ho was going for the record with Mickey 17. This movie is like a night club that Stefon from SNL would frequent, because it has everything: multiple Robert Pattinsons, adorably freaky creatures, Trump impressions, environmentalism, bad friends, space travel, sauce, social commentary; all that's missing is Dan Cortese. Despite its ambition and Oscar-winning director, Mickey 17 is as forgettable as its release date. March i

"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts": Bridging Three Eras of Transformers

The seventh installment in the live-action Transformers franchise, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" (2023), produced by Hasbro and Paramount Pictures, continues the narrative laid out in previous films, interweaving the fates of humans, Autobots, and Maximals. This latest adventure transports audiences back to the 1990s. "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" (2023) serves as a sequel to "Bumblebee" (2018). Interestingly, director Steven Caple Jr. was born in 1988, after the prime years of Generat

Interstellar: Once My Favorite Science Fiction Movie

Introduction: Oppenheimer made its limited release in several locations, and received excellent reviews. The film showcases a different style to previous works by its director, Christopher Nolan. This is the second-to-last article in the Before Oppenheimer series. As the official release of Oppenheimer approaches, the series will conclude next week. In this article, I will share my thoughts on Interstellar. Although it used to be my favorite film, I discovered some flaws upon the second viewing.

Knock at the Cabin: The Fictional Fire of Sincerity

Horror films, as a widely popular movie genre, are becoming both more mainstream and market driven. At the same time, some films are transcending the genre to become auteur cinema, with M. Night Shyamalan's works being a prime example. His latest film, Knock at the Cabin, based on Paul Tremblay’s horror novel The Cabin at the End of the World, is a testament to the best that the horror genre has to offer this year. The plot follows a family who are held hostage by four strangers who claim that t

The past is already here: 2025 in "Her" and "Mountains May Depart"

The American sci-fi film “Her” and the Chinese art-house film “Mountains May Depart” both set their stories in 2025. In other words, the future envisioned in these films has now overlapped with our present reality! Happy New Year! 2025 is here! Early this morning, I received a unique New Year’s greeting—a piece of writing dated back to 2005 by a primary school student titled “A Reunion 20 Years Later.” In the story, a child imagines being awakened by a robot and, out of habit, glances at his ele

The Matrix: Surpassing Dune, Still Reigns as the Ultimate Sci-Fi Masterpiece

As superhero movies are often considered as science fiction, The Matrix by the Wachowski siblings presents a narrative challenge with its gritty, unyielding depth and is a tough nut to crack. However, its greatness transcends the need for facile comparisons. In the absence of The Matrix, the box office standout of 1999 would still be Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. But this wild horse galloped onto the scene, making audiences feel like Lucas' space opera had already drifted away from

The Lone Hero of the End Times

Director Francis Lawrence said, "This type of story about a man's isolated life and the idea of surviving alone in a modern urban environment fascinated me to no end, and that's how the idea of bringing this story to life on video came about. The best part of the film lies in the fact that here is a man who has to fight against the whole world, and it was born half a century ago, but it still manages to stir the imagination infinitely even now." I Am Legend aims to portray a sense of heroism thr

The Gorge: Romantic assassins in the middle of a Lovecraftian landscape

One of the most promising releases of the beginning of the year in the streaming world has been the blockbuster film The Gorge, released on February 14 (a very appropriate date) immerses us in a world of conspiracies and apocalyptic threats while surprisingly integrating romance in an organic way, all happening in an impressive and huge space of isolation. The Gorge is a film that shows you a display of original monsters and a landscape worthy of a Lovecraft nightmare, but to your complete surpr

Ridley Scott Could Turn One Hundred Years of Solitude into a Sci-Fi Movie

Márquez's masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude is a great sci-fi fable in my opinion. There are many stunning scene descriptions in the book that, if adapted to the big screen using IMAX imaging technology, will definitely become an awe-inspiring visual spectacle praised by global audiences. It could even surpass the just-released Dune: Part Two. At the end of the book, an unprecedented windstorm swept through the small town of Macondo, and the entire town and its residents were swept away

The Mystery of the “3 Body Problem” Home Reception

It is hard to assess the complexity of a sci-fi world. One way to help is by making it accessible. But for those already inside, the efforts could seem humiliating, especially when it involves cross-cultural interactions. When “The Three-Body Problem” was first published early this century, it gained a cult following, but not big enough for its author to ponder the commercial value of this property. As a result, he sold the movie/television rights for a fixed, paltry sum. When Netflix launched t

What is the difference between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049?

Blade Runner and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 are important works in the history of sci-fi films. Comparing them side-by-side is a natural and equally exciting thing, for they allow us to see how different creators can depict the same subject differently, and how these differences, whether big or small, are influenced by the core values and goals of the creator. Blade Runner is classic in essence. It is a story about the underdogs revolting against authority. As with many of Ridley Scott's movie

Who are the real-life Fremen?

Dune was… surprisingly good? I can’t lie, I thought the first movie was dense and confusing as hell, so I wasn’t looking forward to the sequel. Luckily, though, despite how painfully long it was (literally - my back started aching halfway through), there was a lot more action and development that made the movie feel like an actual movie rather than a weird fantasy info-dump. Best of all, though, was getting to know the Fremen more. I feel like we rarely see films that touch on, let alone focus o

It is a masterpiece of science fiction and also one of the best films of the year.

It is one of those gems that, because of its rare beauty and particularity, does not go unnoticed. It is a luxurious cinematic work and an extraordinary analysis of the threats posed by artificial intelligence. At first I struggled to understand what kind of films could be qualified with the term "red flag" or be considered a warning to viewers or to humanity, apart from films that deal with serial killers or psychopaths such as The Lovely Bones (2009), (known as "From My Heaven" in Romantic Ame
