In March 1965, “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” had its world premiere at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival. It was Sergei Parajanov’s debut feature drama, but the director himself couldn’t attend. Known for his eccentric genius and strong personality, the then-40-year-old Parajanov declared excitedly, “I will go to Argentina and never return to the Soviet Union.” Predictably, given the restrictions of the Soviet era, he was denied a visa to Argentina.
