Never really liked him before, but after The Batman? Dude totally won me over. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

Mickey 17: A Philosophical Odyssey into Identity and Existence

By Rumpelstiltskin. Ah, my dear mortals, what would you do if death ceased to be the end and became nothing more than a bureaucratic formality? "Mickey 17," the latest masterpiece from the brilliant Bong Joon-ho, dares to explore this idea with the skill of a storyteller who knows that the right questions matter more than the answers. From the very first scene, the film immerses us in a world where humanity has extended its dominion to the farthest reaches of the universe. Our protagonist, Micke

"Mickey 17": Bong Joon-ho's Sci-Fi Satire in the Trump Era

"Mickey 17": Bong Joon-ho's Sci-Fi Satire in the Trump Era In a climactic moment of Mickey 17 (2025), Mickey 18 (Robert Pattinson) pulls out a gun in the middle of a crowded celebration and fires at colonial administrator Marshall (Mark Ruffalo) as the latter delivers a speech on stage. The bullet grazes Marshall’s cheek, triggering chaos among the onlookers. If this scene feels unsurprising, it’s not just because Robert (Pattinson) here is channeling another Robert (De Niro) , being a copycat k

JennMaxwell: Couldn't agree more! I really wish it was able to be released years ago when it was initially supposed to. Maybe it would have landed better then.

MICKEY 17: A Satire About American Capitalism

'Are You Afraid To Die?' This might be one of the oldest and deepest philosophical questions and Mickey 17 delivers triggering response; One that is darkly comedic and existentially horrifying. At first glance, the film looks like another sci-fi survival story. But this is Bong Joon Ho , the Film Director who has spent his entire careerr exposing the myth of meritocracy and the cruelty of capitalism. A great example of this is it’s the class juxtapositions of Parasite and the environmental activ

Ishika Banerjee: I totally understand your critique and where it's coming from, but this movie felt too plain to me. It follows the same plot points, character arcs, and themes as any "eat the rich" critique of American capitalism, without taking them in an interesting direction. We already know that slavery is bad, cloning is problematic, and the rich are terrible. I was disappointed that the film didn’t bring any nuance to these ideas, unlike how Joon did with Parasite.

Mickey 17 and the Emptiness of "Eat the Rich" Cinema

This is how I imagine the Mickey 17 pitch meeting went down: Producer: It's a sci-fi movie about cloning—when the main character dies, he's regenerated with his memories intact. But then, he accidentally gets cloned while he's still alive, and now there are two of him. Studio: So, The Sixth Day? And also- Producer: No, no, it's different! It tackles all the themes Hollywood pretends to care about—climate change, colonization, corrupt corporations, the "orange man," and the working class being ex

Bob Woolsey: I was hungry for some biting criticism and this article delivered. Didn't even need any sauce!

Mickey 17 Has No Sauce

How many forgettable things can you put in a movie? It felt like Bong Joon Ho was going for the record with Mickey 17. This movie is like a night club that Stefon from SNL would frequent, because it has everything: multiple Robert Pattinsons, adorably freaky creatures, Trump impressions, environmentalism, bad friends, space travel, sauce, social commentary; all that's missing is Dan Cortese. Despite its ambition and Oscar-winning director, Mickey 17 is as forgettable as its release date. March i

Mickey 17 and the Problems with Bong Joon-Ho's Hollywood Productions

Has Bong Joon-Ho’s work been gradually transforming through his collaborations with Hollywood studios? His latest film, Mickey 17, makes this suspicion even more evident. In this eclectic mix of scientific ethics, technological determinism, capitalist dilemmas, democratic crises, and class division, all sharp critiques are constantly dissolved by Bong Joon-Ho’s humor. Over the slightly unbalanced and somewhat drawn-out 134 minutes, Bong seems to deviate from the essence of “satire”—using metapho

Ishika Banerjee: I very much agree with you, I found Mickey 17 way too on the nose becoming cartoony and goofy without needing to. I couldn't care or take any of the characters seriously by the end and I felt like this whole film was a political statement and one too late.

Mickey 17: What Does It Feel Like to Die?

On February 9, 2020—just days or months before the world came to a standstill (depending on where each of us were at the time)—Jane Fonda delivered the final verdict of an awards ceremony that had already had several surprises. An Asian filmmaker, who had won the Palme d’Or less than a year earlier, had just swept the Oscars, taking home Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature, and Best Director for a film that fit the Academy’s standards perfectly while also offering a fascinating

Mickey 17 Isn’t About What You Think It Is

By all accounts, I should have been excited to watch Mickey 17 - and I was! I’m not much of a gamer, but it reminded me of all the Hardspace : Shipbreaker playthroughs and analyses I watched, even though the film is apparently actually based on a book. As a lifelong leftist and anti-cap girlie, seeing the themes of indentured servitude and the darkest version of capitalism explored on screen was a deeply appealing premise... So tell me why I was disappointed. Or at least, I was disappointed at t

Bob Woolsey: It's definitely a bit of a movie stew through the back half there. The kind you make by throwing whatever you have left in the fridge into the pot.

Exit Through "Bong Joon-ho" and the ‘Mickey 17’

"It's not bad," my wife commented after watching Mickey 17. (What? Really? This must be Bong Joon-ho's worst film ever! I thought to myself.) Though I remained silent, my mind raced to find gentle words to tacitly express my true thoughts: "Anyone who's seen Bong's previous works or read the original novel Mickey7 would recognize what a disappointment this movie is." Such a harsh remark (though deliberately toned-down) would surely offend her—and there she was, looking at me intently, suggesting
