Ted, employed as a museum guide facing the imminent closure of his beloved science museum due to dwindling visitors, embarks on a quest for something extraordinary in Africa. Amidst the lush jungle, he crosses paths with a spirited and mischievous little monkey, forging an unbreakable bond that would become his dearest friendship. Curious George? More like Cutest George! This is the glorious and gorgeous last gasp of 2D animation, Jack Johnson didn't have to go that hard, but he did.
While Disney animations often feel formulaic, their attention to detail and imaginative flourishes shine here. The non-speaking monkey is undoubtedly the film’s highlight. Unfortunately, the plot is overly simplistic, and the pacing feels erratic. Moreover, the protagonist’s personality change and actions seem recycled from countless other animated films.
The film's adventures are charming and whimsical, with the little monkey being undeniably adorable. However, the biggest flaw lies in the protagonist's incessant chatter. Much of what could have been conveyed through expressions, body language, and visual storytelling is instead drowned out by excessive dialogue. While Will Ferrell's voice work is quirky, it borders on tiresome.
