Once again it's my turn to talk about a recent series from the last 50 days, and what better way to talk about the one that, in my opinion, closed with a flourish its glorification as the best animated series ever, my dear and beloved Arcane.
I never was (and never will be) a fan of LOL; however, around the same time, but three years ago, this particular series started to catch my attention. I decided to watch a review or two about it and was fascinated by its animation style, and of course, it sparked a genuine interest in me with all the praise I saw for it.
So, I set off on one of the best audiovisual paths I've ever taken in my life. Those nine episodes, that animation that looked like a wallpaper in every pause, the characters, the development, the conflict, the music... I fell in love with everything Arcane in that December of 2021, but if you want to read more, follow me, because before the glorification comes the consecration, and with the first season, everything we know today began.

Season 1
I can't talk directly about the second season without first mentioning the solid work of art that was the first season, the one that laid the foundations and amazed everyone with its charm in every aspect.
The story of two sisters under the civil conflict between two enemy cities, crossed by a political line of fire and with their own direct internal conflicts, forced to take completely different paths after the tragedy committed by Powder with the simple intention of helping.
![Image](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/4d30b5d244e68854d5b7e3d2a6aaf650.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)
In this first season, apart from the emotional conflict between Jinx and Vi, the foundations are laid for what would be the major conflict at the end of the series, such as the Hextech gem, being an invention of Viktor and Jayce. In addition to the political conflicts between Piltover and Zaun, Arcane manages to pack all these events (and more) into a single season that ends up being perfectly consistent in all narrative aspects.
Three acts divided into three episodes, with only nine episodes in total, with a rather short number of episodes and being an average length, Arcane managed to mark its position as one of the best animated series of all time with its irruption, at least unexpected for many, myself included.
I could talk all day long about how much its first season fascinates me on a narrative, sensorial, and emotional level, how fresh the series is to know how to connect with everything that happens, on every side, with every point; it's simply a love letter.
![Image](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/86f3f16d25cc9f84c7868fd9b1444f49.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)
Visuals and soundtrack
It's no secret to any fan that the animation that went into the making of this superb audiovisual work is simply on the highest pedestal there is. It goes so far that the only one capable of surpassing its animation style is Arcane itself, expanding its versatile range of styles to explore the sensory in every narrative moment for the story.
Each paused frame of any episode played could easily be a wallpaper for your PC desktop, and no wonder, because the level of detail is so extensive that those in charge of Arcane's magnificent animation, beyond achieving what I mentioned, also enhance the importance of the narrative through the visual and not so much the textual, specifically in the second season, where this quality is at its peak.
![Image](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/3b88c77897703c1b2bc64c271896c95a.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)
Now, allow me to highlight what for me are the four best shots of the entire series, which is not an easy task at all to accomplish, but they are essentially my favorites because of their emotional and narrative weight in what they would unleash within the story.
Jinx's flare
I remember very well that this was the first scene/plan that left me spellbound while watching it, adding to Wookid's ‘Guns for Hire’ playing in the background. Vi and Caitlyn running away from Silco, Jinx lighting that flare that one day meant Vi would return to rescue her from any danger or doubt, Silco cursing his minions as he beats them, the freneticism of the whole scene, the spiritual bodies of Mylo and Claggor at Jinx's side... The whole shot of what that flare meant, that call for help infused with the characteristic blue color that Powder once possessed as dominant.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/3535b4e70444223e2e272f776587ce9f.png&source=s3-peliplat)
Adding to this point, how not to break down the meaning and impact of ‘Guns for Hire’ within this splendid scene. Moving away a little from the basic explanatory summary of the song itself, such as the betrayal of being loved for personal gain, that time is running out in this dice game, and so on. The intrinsic meaning of the song seems to me the most nourishing within the scene, as, well, Arcane is adept at doing this practice.
Throughout the nearly three minutes of this timeless visual mastery, the song's chorus is constantly repeated. As the flare is lit, it sounds: ‘Kiss your perfect day goodbye’ which, in my view, is an allegory for the slow descent of what would be the doom of Powder's remains in Jinx. Following on from the verses: ‘Tuck your innocence goodnight; you sold your friends like guns for hire; go play with your blocks.’ Drawing simultaneous parallels between Jinx with the flare lit next to Mylo and Claggor's reflection, Silco resigned after being outwitted by Vi and Caitlyn and the latter two running away from him.

Enter the bridge scenes between Piltover and Zaun, preparing for the blockade with the lines, ‘And now you'll pay when these walls come tumbling down.’ Showing the metaphorical meaning of the blockade between the two cities with the guards who, later, because of Jinx herself, would end up falling. And finally, repeating the whole chorus, we see the shot of Silco among the destroyed lights of the fallen building after murdering the shimmer wielder and Vi looking dumbfounded at that blue flare impregnated in the top of the sky, knowing that this was her sister. Closing with the last shot of the walls on the bridge, playing again: ‘And now you'll pay when these walls come tumbling down. Oh, they're tumbling down’ preparing us for what lay ahead.

The destruction of the Council
The most beautifully tragic sequence in all of Arcane comes at the end of the first season, when Jinx, after Silco's death and his acceptance of who he is, decides to destroy the council by sending a missile empowered with the Hextech gem. Playing with Sting and Ray Chen's ‘What Could Have Been’ in the background, a melancholic and sad melody with strong tones of anger and frustration, reflecting the beauty of destruction.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/409a0dcce5b6831774bc74f9f7bcfae5.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)
The melody of the song begins with Jinx's dialogue to Vi, her voice broken and saddened: ‘I thought maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though I'm... different. But you changed too. So... here's to the new us.’ Following her speech, the song solemnly enters like a ringing finger: ‘I am the monster you created’ with Jinx taking the Hextech gem from the middle of the table, looking at Vi for one last time before what it would cause.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/3682f972823cdee10bfbfaddaa1ab5c9.png&source=s3-peliplat)
He takes his cannon in hand and places the gem inside it; we see the shot of Jinx in counter-dive, in front of a sky completely tinged with red, representing all the blood that would be shed as a result of what he was about to do: ‘You ripped out all my parts. And worst of all, for me to live, I gotta kill the part of me that saw. That I needed you more.’ Accepting her new destiny as Jinx, accepting her new ‘me’ which is also reflected in small details such as the chair she is sitting on, which forms the word ‘Jinx’ and the crows, representative of bad omen or bad luck.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/f1771027dac3c63abd0bd738be551ba4.png&source=s3-peliplat)
‘I hope you know we had everything. And you broke me and left these pieces.’ These are the ringing verses as we see Jinx in the shot watching the council, next to a fully reddened moon. Preparing to take aim, he charges Fishbone. Silco is shown aching, showing what he once told Jinx: ‘We'll show them; we will show them all.’ With Jinx crying tears of Shimmer, Silco's creation, Caitlyn wanting to stop what is about to happen with her eyes, Vi wailing, and Jinx finally firing the cannon: ‘I want you to hurt like you hurt me today and... I want you to lose like I lose when I play what could have been. Oh, what could have been.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/047e5ad4a4b57a86ecf4c32a6099989d.png&source=s3-peliplat)

Along with the beginning of the supported proposal for peace between the two cities and Jinx's cry of suffering, finally, the missile leaves the fishbone completely uncracked, displaying a characteristic blue trail on its way: ‘Why don't you love who I am? What we could have been’ directly alluding to what would have been if that treaty had been made and no one had been killed by Jinx's attack on the council.

‘I am your ghost, a fallen angel. You ripped out all my parts. I couldn't care what invention you made me. Cause I, I was meant to be yours.’ We see Sevika in Silco's office, her chair empty and her arm broken, trying to light a cigarette, Ekko with Heimerdinger in the Firelights' shelter, focusing on the clock that would make sense in the events of the second season. Singed, sitting and looking at a picture of his daughter, and in a few frames above, what would become Warwick, the wild version of Vander. And Ambessa, looking at the pictures of the Noxus ships painted gold by Mel. All this accompanied by the gradual signs of each council member accepting the peace proposal, an uneasy peace before disaster.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/d3326141f0ba7ad11d9449ed395fb7c7.png&source=s3-peliplat)

And here is where the pinnacle of visual beauty occurs within the emotional tragedy depicted throughout the series, the shot of Vi and Caitlyn, under a bloody moon, with that missile flying over them heading for a point of no return. Where we hear again to the beat of the chorus: ‘I hope you know we had everything. And you broke me and left these pieces.’
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/91741fbf8fd048caad8b802df529c4ba.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)

Along with a transition from Caitlyn's desperate cry to her mother voting in favor of the proposal. ‘I want you to hurt like you hurt me today, and I want you to lose like I lose when I play.’
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/12859bb3ebc6195f95544a89663568b0.png&source=s3-peliplat)

And with these last verses, we close the season by seeing the end of Jinx's shooting journey, which would change the entire course of the story, fueled by tragedy, corruption, selfishness, and pain, closing the season with a haunting silence and a final ‘What could have been’.

Vander's memories
One of my favorite scenes, and one of the ones that made me cry the most because of the weight this moment carries in the plot, was the flashback to Vander's almost lost consciousness as Warwick, with d4vid's ‘Remember me’ playing and tugging at a lot of heartstrings.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/83aae4ee14d0a51a5399c0d556c5dae5.png&source=s3-peliplat)
The scene begins with Vi promising Vander that they will succeed in bringing him out of the beast he has now become; consequently, we begin with the sequence between Viktor and Vander, living with remoteness, as Viktor tries to find a way to access his memories: ‘Can you find me? I'm not hiding. All my memories aren't mine. I'm not me.’

As he finds himself inside his mind, passing through every corner turned wild, until: ‘We're all creatures, who we might be. Find the mirror, see what I see, ah.’ When he manages, finally, to hit upon his consciousness, upon the memories of the great, strong, and brave man he once was for all of Zaun.

The musical notes increase, and we begin to see Vander's memories painted in watercolors, with Silco in his youth, with Benzo, with Felicia pregnant, and, finally, his daughters as children, and this is where the chorus of the song comes in: ‘Remember me, remember me. I'm on my own; remember me. I'm too far gone; I couldn't see. Remember me, remember me. All the times I cut so deep. All my life I couldn't breathe. Remember me, remember me. Remember me, remember me.’ Showing us what their life was like before all the mess, before the death of Vi and Jinx's parents, before their death, before everything bad that life threw at this family that in days gone by was completely inseparable. We even get our first glimpse of Felicia with the girls, her father, the little rabbit-like gesture Powder acquires from her, and Vi's sparring with Vander with the same gloves she would later fight for Zaun. Simply put, something short, but so beautiful that it feels like a lifetime in watercolors.

The dance of Ekko and Jinx
A 2:45 minute sequence that hurts a lifetime and another one playing to the beat of Stromae & Pomme's ‘Ma meilleure ennemie’ in French, which reflects a particular feeling of what we could have lived, but only remains an idealization that will never be present in our reality, but maybe in another life.
We begin the scene with Mylo and Claggor admiring the party and giving way to Powder's entrance onto the dance floor, paralleling his entrance onto the bridge in the same episode 7, but from the first season, making everything maintain a perfect rhythmic consonance. ‘T'es la meilleure chose qui m'est arrivée. Mais aussi la pire chose qui m'est arrivéе. Ce jour où je t'ai rencontrée, j'aurais peut-être préféré. Que ce jour ne soit jamais arrivé (Arrived)’ Showing Ekko's feelings in an inordinate balance between his feelings for Powder and, at the same time, the very hatred he feels caused by everything Jinx has done in his universe. A yin yang of infatuation.

Powder enters, radiant with her eyes dazzling, a beautiful diamond blue, and wearing a beautiful dress similar to the ones her mother once wore: ‘La pire des bénédictions. La plus belle des malédictions. De toi, j'devrais m'éloigner. Mais comme dit le dicton: ‘Plutôt qu'être seul, mieux vaut être mal accompagné.’ It reflects again the complex dynamics of the relationship between these two characters, being for each other the worst of blessings and the best of curses.

They hover to the rhythm of the music, and everything is reduced to a dance at 4 frames per second, referring to the number of seconds Ekko can travel in time. The ambience turns to flips in shades of purple and blue; ‘Tu sais c'qu'on dit. Sois près d'tes amis les plus chers. Mais aussi. Encore plus près d'tes adversaires’ Alluding to the duality between friendship and love with enmity and hate... “Keep your loved ones close, but your enemies closer,” dancing between the same emotional combat of Powder and Jinx.

‘Mais ma meilleure ennemie, c'est toi. Fuis-moi, le pire, c'est toi et moi. Mais si tu cherches encore ma voix. Oublie-moi, le pire, c'est toi et moi’ At this point, I have no words to describe the weight and beauty of these verses within the context of the scene; it is simply beautiful. Next we have Ekko and Powder's dialogue on the rooftop, the one where one day Vi, in another universe, told him that the city would respect them.

Powder: Some night!
Ekko: It's beautiful.

Powder: Where did you learn those moves?
Ekko: I was just following your lead.
Powder: Mhm, he's got lines!
Ekko: Hey... Um, I just want to thank you. You know, for everything. I used to dream the undercity could be like this. But somewhere I got consumed by all the ways it wasn't. I gave up on it; I gave up on you.

Powder: I've never seen you give up on anything, Ekko.

Ekko: You ever wish you could just stay in one moment?

Powder: Sometimes taking a leap forward means leaving a few things behind.

Ekko: Promise I'll never forget this.
Powder: You better not. (Ekko rejects Powder's attempt at a kiss at first because of his doubt as to whether it was right or not, but ends up succumbing to temptation... We can't blame him.)

‘Mais ma meilleure ennemie, c'est toi. Fuis-moi, le pire, c'est toi et moi’ The beautiful chorus plays again, emphasizing once more the complexity of the relationship between Ekko and Powder... They end the scene dancing, laughing, wanting to stay in a single moment, in a single life in which everything really went well. The beauty of what could not be.

Emotionality
It's ended up being quite a long article as I've adequately elaborated on every point I wanted to make, and that brings me to the next point, and the one I consider the cornerstone of the whole series: emotionality.
Arcane is the series that has aroused the most complex emotions in me in such a short time; if it has a unique ability, it's clearly that, as I'm not the only one to whom it happens. Beyond the objective part, which makes it clear how super-perfect Arcane is, it touches many heartstrings; it's a series that, within all the fantasy of a magical world, is based on human imperfection, and that makes it beautiful.
Looking at just four scenes, it clearly left a lot of scenes behind that carry enormous emotional and narrative weight, such as Isha's death, Jinx's death, the end of the first act of the first season, the resurrection of Vander's consciousness inside Warwick, the union of the sisters, and the very end of the series with Viktor and Jayce... As I said, it's a series that focuses on the human; there are no good or bad characters, only greys. They all did something good or bad, with their reasons for doing it or not. But now, I'll close with the scene that burned in my soul when the last episode of the series aired last November 23rd.

The scene of Ekko alone, on the same rooftop where moments before he met the one who was and always will be the love of his life, whom he now believes to be dead after managing to save the world. Some consider what Jayce had to go through after the Hextech anomaly more difficult, and while it is true that he lived through hell, Ekko had the disadvantage of living a fantasy on the level of the best blessings, living in heaven, in a universe where everyone is still alive, where cities live in peace and harmony, and where Jinx is Powder.
![Image description](https://img.peliplat.com/api/resize/v1?imagePath=peliplat/article/20241219/fca56bbba9dad9cc191245155a88b934.jpeg&source=s3-peliplat)
But he couldn't stay there, because Ekko is the true hero of Arcane; he decided to leave paradise to return to hell and extinguish it from the fire. The cost? To be left alone, because life is unfair even when you do the greatest act of heroism you can. It destroyed me to see Ekko alone, all the emotional weight of his figure sitting in the same place where he was two episodes ago, burning a piece of paper with his friends' names on it, knowing he won, but not as much as he thought he would win. And yet, Ekko will go on, for his friends, for the city, and for Jinx.

Arcane is my second favorite series because it is about love, love of imperfection, love of everything that at some point we think is broken but is really part of our human nature. I leave this article happy to have talked about the best animated series in history and a little bit of everything perfect that it has inside it.
