Swoff is the third generation of his family to serve in the military. He goes through boot camp before being sent to fight in Iraq, where he has to carry his rifle and about 50 kilos of equipment on his back across scorching deserts. In a place he doesn't understand, fighting an enemy he can't see, and not really understanding why he's there, Swoff and his battalion mates survive local adversity with dark humor and sarcasm.

Battle-scarred and disillusioned by the war, Corporal Chris Merrimette is put in charge of a unit whose next mission is to resupply a remote outpost on the edge of Taliban-controlled territory.
