The Stoneman and Cameron families, from the North and South respectively, are bound by friendship until the Civil War forces them onto opposing sides. Phil Stoneman, who loves Margaret Cameron, and Ben Cameron, captivated by Elsie Stoneman's photograph, become soldiers in rival armies. As the war brings devastating losses, conflicts sparks between both families, which follows even after blood has been shed.
