Ruby Malik, a talented and ambitious woman of South Asian heritage, has become a multi-millionaire in the hyper toxic, ultra-masculine world of London hedge funds. Despite this, she faces extreme pressure to maintain her success surrounded by racist, misogynist, privileged colleagues who blame the slightest hiccup on her gender or her race. After being passed over for promotion in favour of a less qualified, more privileged colleague, she reaches breaking point. She returns to her home town of Bradford in northern England and reconnects with her childhood friend Naz, whose beauty salons Ruby bank rolls. Ruby spends time in the busy salons and finds what she was missing in the big city - community, love, affirmation. But her return triggers old grievances in Naz who feels Ruby forgot her in the bright lights of London. Ruby realises Naz's friendship is precious and vows to do more than just throw money at Naz's salons. She vows to 'be there' from now on. Word of Ruby's return reaches her estranged brother Sully who accuses her of sacrificing her relationship with him and their parents just to have a career. It's clear the siblings want to make up, but the resentments they harbour are still raw. Tentatively, they spend time together - only for Ruby to discover her brother is a violent gangster forcing her best friend Naz to launder money through her salons. Naively believing she can help, Ruby offers her brother's crime bosses alternative money laundering solutions - if they leave Naz alone. Ruby's offer of financial services is accepted; she delivers her side of the bargain - but the crime gang keep changing the terms, dragging Ruby into a quagmire of criminality with no end in sight. As the series unfolds, Ruby is coerced into increasingly illegal actions to keep her friend Naz safe. She gets caught in a police sting and is forced to inform on her brother while simultaneously healing her broken relationship with him.
