A year and a half ago, Lieutenant Colonel Yan Ozerskiy was accused of killing a certain Lyudmila and arrested. But thanks to the competent work of the lawyer, the position of Yan himself and some minor inconsistencies in the circumstances of the case, the court acquitted him. Ozerskiy wants to return to the service not only in order to take revenge on Effendiev, who, as Yan is sure, organized his "landing", but also because he does not know how to do anything else but search for criminals. And he does not want to give up his beloved work, to which he gave half his life. But there can be no question of returning to the previous place of work, his place has long been occupied. General Khlopin offers him the position of head of the department for solving crimes of past years, the so-called "paper department". Khlopin is sure that Ozerskiy will refuse, but that was not the case. At the new place of work, four subordinates are already waiting for him, as well as packs of dusty, long-abandoned cases.
