A young nobleman Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov arrives in the capital St. Petersburg, where he enjoys success in society, leads a dissolute life, and in between develops a plan for Russian colonization and economic development of Transcaucasia. Tsar Nicholas is more interested in Griboyedov as a diplomat capable of demanding payment from the Persians of the indemnity they are holding up.
