Dawn

After humanity has nearly destroyed itself in a nuclear conflagration, it is rescued by extraterrestrials. The human race is preserved for 250 years until radiation levels have declined. The Oankali, the alien species, has helped restore the planet and they will return humans to Earth, but at a cost.
