Offenburg, late 1940s. Anna Burda (Katharina Wackernagel) is married to the printer and publisher Franz Burda (Fritz Karl), whose business quickly prospers again during reconstruction. But the comfortable life of a publisher's wife is not enough for Anna. She dreams of launching a style-setting fashion magazine for German society, which is recovering from the wounds of war. Franz is against it; the patriarch does not like the idea of a working wife. When Anna discovers that Franz not only has a long-term relationship with his former secretary, but also has a daughter, she is deeply hurt. She is completely beside herself when she learns that Franz is financing a fashion magazine for his lover. Anna gives her husband a choice: either divorce - or he transfers the competitor's magazine publishing company to her. Anna drives out her opponent without compromise and immediately begins to reshape the paper according to her own ideas. She, who cannot sew herself, is determined to provide women with patterns that practically any of them can use. From now on, Anna calls herself Aenne, and the wife becomes a successful businesswoman, a role model for emancipation before the idea of female self-determination even became an issue.
