Nate and Adina Thompson stand helpless as a deadly disease begins to quickly engulf planet Earth. A couple since college and married shortly after, the two stand together on the beach at Cape Canaveral the night before Nate is scheduled to begin his two-year mission to the moon. Although they know that they will see each other again, saying goodbye is never easy. They linger in this moment, internalizing what is about to happen and hoping that nothing will go wrong. En route to the moon, the spaceship Persephone, of which Nate and seven other astronauts are crew members on, experiences a massive engine malfunction. This sends them drastically off course and NASA is forced to abort the moon mission. Given the ships velocity, trajectory, and depleting fuel reserves, NASA advises Nate and the rest of the crew to stay on their current path, which is taking them on an orbital path clockwise around the sun. The plan is to meet up with Earth again on the other side of the sun. With limited rations and several malfunctioning systems, they struggle to figure out how to survive the trip. Back on Earth, Adina is forced to move in with one of the other astronauts families and volunteers a majority of her time at a local soup kitchen. The show follows Nate and the rest of the crew of Persephone in space and Adina back on Earth in parallel story lines.
