João Salgado returns from Paris and falls in love with Margarida, unaware that she is his brother Francisco's girlfriend, triggering a serious family conflict. The tension escalates when Helena, Francisco's mother, discovers the affair and vows to destroy the couple while concealing the truth that João is, in fact, the son of the housekeeper, Lucinda. Meanwhile, Helena tries to prevent her youngest son, Rui, from pursuing a career in football by manipulating his ambitious girlfriend, Mina.
