La lumière des justes (1979)

The life and loves of a young Frenchwoman and a Russian officer in the nineteenth century. Sophie distributes the money she has to the poor in the neighboring village. She wants to make the moujiks understand progress. Since her daughter-in-law loves this village, the father-in-law decides not to accede to her son's request to give this piece of land to the widow.
