Three brothers run away from home, influenced by the idea of living like Robin Hood and his merry men, deep in the forest of Brendon Chase. They take only what they will need, including a .22 rifle fitted with a silencer, which they pinched from Rumbold, their gardener. They make their camp in an ancient, hollow oak tree and live like outlaws, loving the dangers and excitements of their wild surroundings. Their aim is never to be caught- but how can they avoid all the people who are searching from them- including the police? James Andrew Hall adapted the novel by Denys Watkins-Pitchford (commonly known as B.B) very well, to accurately portray the events that occur in the book onto the television. He was keen to capture the era that the book is set in. The production staff went to great lengths to get a period feel for the drama and even altered road markings, removed roof aerials and repainted front doors, in Porchester, in order to recreate the 1920s. The series consists of 13 episodes and was first screened in December 1980.
