Years ago, Mateo Sancristobal left his homeland Spain to become a doctor in New York. Grumpy and reluctant but with excellent surgical skills, Mateo earns wealth and prestige, but his successful high-class lifestyle ends when one day he has a nervous breakdown while performing an operation and suffers a sudden fit of hemophobia (fear of the sight of blood). Running from New York and the ghosts of the past, he travels to the town of San Martín del Sella in the Principality of Asturias (in northwestern Spain) where he spent his childhood holidays; he becomes the town's doctor and moves in with his Aunt Juana. While she acquaints him with country life, he makes new friends: Tom the bartender and Alfredo the cop. But then he meets beautiful schoolteacher Adriana and tries to have a relationship with her; he also meets charming, eccentric neighbors Carol and Elena (Adriana's close friends), his new secretary Marga, and others such as Mario, Ernesto, Bruno, Pedro, Lolo, Riqui, and Ana, in whose daily lives he will be involved despite himself.
