Cliodhna, a pregnant, exiled Irish woman in England, haunted by loneliness and depression. Her struggle with isolation worsens as wary neighbours distance themselves. Homesickness and depression deteriorate her health. Eerie wails haunt her nights, initially dismissed as imagination. As they intensify, Cliodhna confronts her fears to protect her unborn child.
