The Great Race (1981)

That the Hardie 1000 is Australia's greatest motor race is beyond question. Since it began at Phillip Island in Victoria as the Armstrong 500 in 1960 it has developed into a national sporting event and a significant television property. It has acquired a status approaching that of the Sydney and Melbourne football grand finals, the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Open Golf title and the Australian Open tennis titles.
