Mattia is 17 years old. Born and raised in a post-industrial province of northern Italy, he is the son of an old-fashioned trade unionist and an overprotective mother. A sensitive and fragile boy, who is also full of rage, Mattia navigates difficult social and family relationship, finding release through hip- hop music. The sudden death of his older brother exacerbates his struggles and fuels a lacerating sense of guilt, initiating a period of great transformation. Mattia leaves school, begins to work in a local factory and gives up music despite his talent. In search of deeper meaning, he discovers Islam through his Moroccan colleague Murad. After a trip to Morocco and his blossoming friendship with Murad and Murad's brother Rashid, Mattia comes to see converting to Islam as the key to a more autonomous and meaningful life. But conversion is not enough to heal his inner conflicts, those with his family, colleagues and even with his new Moroccan friends. Hurt by a romantic failure and gripped with restlessness, Mattia is torn between the prospect of a normal life and a dangerous drift. Almost unconsciously he takes the path of progressive isolation and radicalization. Will he resist the temptation of extremism? Amid doubts, difficulties and discoveries, the film tells the story of a teenager of today's world, tempted by isolation and saved by friendship.
