It's 1942. The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 has plunged the United States into World War II. The country is gripped with paranoia and uncertainty, as its citizens turn on each other in a vain effort to protect their way of life. As thousands of Japanese-Americans are being rounded up, dispossessed of their property, and interned without trial, many thousands more don uniforms and prepare to ship out to fight in the Pacific and Europe. On the eve of his enlistment, a young journalist at a Los Angeles-based newspaper called Smith continues to obsess over proving that the Japanese intend to strike the continental US, believing that the mysterious lights that appeared above Los Angeles on February 24, 1942 represent a clear sign of aggression. Forced to team up with a nisei photographer named Ken, Smith must find a way to work with a man he believes to be a secret enemy, discovering in the end that the mysteries of the universe serve to unite rather than divide us.
