San Jose's downtown wasn't always what it is today. Defined by prostitution and pornography, San Jose had some growing up to do. From the streets, a musical revolution was brewing and it was headquartered at a dingy little rock and roll bar on South First Street called The Cactus Club. Operating for over fourteen years, The Cactus Club, along with a now thriving local music scene, helped propel South First Street and most of the city's downtown out of the gutter it once wallowed in. However, once the city caught wind of the change that was happening it had to decide if this was the type of culture it truly wanted as a representative. Rock the Block: The Story of the Cactus Club tells the story of the community of people who came together and made the San Jose music scene a tremendous success in the bay area. San Jose was also proven to be a vital place for art, music and culture, even if the city had other ideas. The story of the Cactus Club is about the people versus the politics, music over money and rock and roll forever. Featuring interviews from Lex Van Den Berghe (Frontier Wives, CBS's Survivor:Africa), Greg Camp (Former Smashmouth founder/guitarist) and a variety of club regulars, Rock the Block is a documentary for all music lovers and supporters of local music.
