While the Communist Hungarian People's Republic was ostensibly fighting terrorism because of its international obligations, Budapest was providing a truly Edenic environment for foreign gunmen hiding in Budapest. From the banks of the Danube, the Jackal and his comrades szervezett the assassinations of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro and Pope John Paul II, the attack on the Munich Olympics and the bombing of Radio Free Europe. Hungarian intelligence services not only supplied arms to the Northern Irish and Arab guerrillas, but also, with the involvement of the Colombian drug cartel, flooded the US markets with a popular drug called metaqualon.
