About the development of the mental health care in Sweden from the patient's view. In the middle of the 20th century, there were around thirty mental hospitals in Sweden of various sizes. The largest mental hospital during the 20th century in Sweden was Beckomberga with approximately 2,000 patient places. Lobotomy was introduced in 1944. The modern medicines made their entrance in 1949 and later the anti-psychiatric movement.
