Child marriage is a major problem in Nepal. Although the legal age for marriage is 20, girls as young as 12 are given--or sold--in marriage to men much, much older than they are, and often by age 13 or 14 have at least one child. In addition, many young girls are forced to do difficult, manual labor to supplement their family's income, and as a result, many girls are poorly educated, if at all. The government and private foundations and organizations have been working to break this cycle, but with little success so far.
