Ernesto's Island (2022)

Matthias - played by Max Riemelt - works very successfully in a Berlin advertising agency and enjoys his luxurious single life. When his mother suddenly dies, a dropout and a committed communist, he has to face his past. With the order to scatter her ashes in Cuba, she sends Matthias on a journey into his past. Matthias finds a family he doesn't want anything to do with. He meets love he doesn't know what to do with and he loses a friend he can't save. When he manages to accept his roots and admits to himself that he's not the ruthless, smug cynic his peers know - that he has different values, still - only then does he understand what he's been missing. He no longer had a home and must build a new one. Cuba stands for the lost dream that everyone actually dreams of: community, equality and humanity. And for the reality that doesn't know all that.
