In 1929, general doctor Fritz Bauer and engineer Hjalmar Cederström were commissioned to prepare proposals for alternative expansions of Stockholm's hospital. The expanding southern districts lacked a hospital, and Cederström broadened the issue to apply to the entire public health of the growing metropolis. Södersjukhuset was built 1937-1944 according to Hjalmar Cederström's and Hermann Imhäuser's design.
