New York City in late autumn 1990 finds 90-year-old Franz Altman in a fight for his life. His landlords are building a huge complex in mid-town Manhattan and have bought up all the surrounding properties. But they can't get Altman out of his junk/curio shop, King Solomon's Treasure. The conflict has made the nonagenarian a celebrity after 60 Minutes did a feature on him called "David and the Corporate Goliath". Now everyone wants a piece of Franz Altman, a native of Vienna who was analyzed by Freud when he was seven, survived Auschwitz, and became an original founder of the State of Israel. Susan Carmichael, a beautiful but bitter reporter for People magazine, has been sent to interview Altman. She hates the assignment and butts heads with the shop owner from the get-go. The movie examines the development of their relationship and the unlikely partnership that eventually develops between them.
