Owing to lack of livelihood opportunities, Shankar travels to his in-law's village along with his wife and two daughters Shraddha and Chamki. In the same village Suraj, a young bachelor who runs a liquor shop, lives with his brother Tarasingh and sister in-law. Suraj falls in love with Shradha at first sight. Shradha likes to ride a bi-cycle and since Suraj owns one, they become fast friends. Shankar promises to Tarasingh that he will get Shradha and Suraj married and eventually keeps his promise by getting them married. On the first night while consummating the marriage, Suraj observes that Shraddha does not bleed. So he goes to the Panchayat accusing that Shradha is not a virgin and throws her out of the house. Shradha is of the opinion that after marriage her husband's home is her rightful home and therefore she returns to Suraj's house. Suraj complains to the Panchayat against Shradha. Shradha battles the age old customs and mindsets prevailing from ages against the society but eventually loses her fight. Seeing her predicament Shradha's younger sister Chamki decides to fight against this injustice and unjustified age-old customs.
