A devastating North Sea storm surge wreaks havoc on the village of Stegebüll. Only the little daughter Wienke survives from the family of dike chief Hauke Haien, who grows up under a different identity in a home for assisted living. When the now 18-year-old wants to know who she actually is, the orphan tracks down her savior from back then: Haien's "foster son" Iven, who works in Hamburg's red light district. In need of money, the convicted bouncer takes on an assignment that leads him to the scars of his own soul. He knows what rejection awaits him and Wienke when they return. In fact, the former mayor Ole Peters is not happy that the daughter of his former opponent is now asking questions about an ambitious dike project. Ole's daughter Ann-Grethe, Iven's childhood crush, also bears heavy burdens from the past. While Iven would like to protect the headstrong Wienke from the truth, she insists on learning dark family secrets.
