When on May 2, 1923 Clemenceau met Marguerite Baldensperger, he was 82 years old, she was 41. She came to ask him for a book intended for a collection of historical works that she directed at Plon. The Tiger, who has lost none of his splendor, has been a wounded man since the Republic unfairly thanked him. Marguerite is a woman crushed by the suicide of her 17-year-old daughter. Between them, the alchemy is immediate. And Clemenceau offers Marguerite this Faustian pact "I will help you to live, you will help me to die".
