In the recent Soviet past, parents sometimes sent their sons to "lie down" in a mental hospital in order to "cut off" their sons from the army, unwanted marriage, or aggressive peers. Alexander, a student of philology, was there when he decided to write an observation novel. At least, that's what he claims. But the doctors immediately find traces of cuts on his hands-the result of a failed suicide attempt.
