The Linklaitors (2005)

Three hundred years ago, two groups of immigrants come across the ocean. One was a cult, dedicated to the powers of darkness that they ensnared in a wooden box. The other was the cadre enlisted by the church to destroy the cult before they could unleash their evil into the world. But the box was lost, and the evil forgotten...until now. This is a story of horror and comedy, but mostly of horror. Jeff, Alissa, Toby, and Sarah head out to the woods to search for a mysterious tree stump that Jeff encountered in his youth. They find it, and buried beneath it is a strange box. When they open it, hundreds of miles away, Lenny Linklaiter knows. He was told by his grandfather that some day the box would resurface, and that he must seek it out and destroy the evil it unleashes. He tracks down the four who opened it, set on killing them. However, the box has unleashed something inside them, too. It begins with mischief: pranks and the like. Soon, it becomes more sinister, and as Lenny closes in on them, they begin to lose control. Lenny finds them and, though torn by the thought of committing murder, he stalks and kills them one by one. But Alissa, the last of the four to live, discovers a ritual that ensures the box will cause no more harm. She has to make a great sacrifice, and keep Lenny from killing her, but she manages to complete the ritual. Lenny escapes, thinking his task is done. When he returns home, he learns a terrifying secret: the box belonged to him all along.
