It's 1875, and 9-year-old Milo and 6-year-old Sarah suddenly find themselves battling outlaws at their family's small ranch on a wild and rugged Texas landscape. Their parents, Cole and Elizabeth, forged the small ranch from nothing with the help of their friends Paco and Maria and Uncle Bob. Tending gardens, milking cows, feeding pigs, and gathering eggs are the normal routine, but one day everything changes. Cole sets out to round up his cattle and bring them closer to home, while leaving Paco, Elizabeth, and Maria alone to watch over the two children. Milo and Sarah head out to catch fish from the creek with their blue tick hound, Dixie, and Milo spies something moving through the trees. He suddenly realizes it's outlaws. He grabs his sister and dog, and they huddle against the bank of the creek as the outlaws pass just above them. Knowing a shortcut home, as soon as the outlaws are out of sight, they sprint for the house.
