Harleen Sidhu was an average young girl from Surrey, BC's South Asian dominated Newton neighbourhood. She loved her family, her culture, and - like many South Asian Canadians - she loved the sport of basketball. At the young age of 13, Harleen found herself thrust into the Canadian national spotlight after she led her Grade 8 basketball team to an undefeated regular season in 2004, shortly after which she was effectively banned from participating in the biggest tournament of her young career. She rallied alongside her school and community to fight the decision, garnering widespread media attention in the process. The first of many battles over the course of her playing career, Harleen went on to play NCAA Division I basketball and came back home for a storybook ending.
