In authoritarian regimes as well as in democratic societies, NGOs and activists of various causes are subject to increasing repression. In recent years, more than sixty laws have been passed around the world to restrict their work. These laws make it more difficult for NGOs to obtain funding or create administrative complications that make their work almost impossible. Large organizations such as Amnesty International are no exception: the organization was forced to suspend its activities in India after the government froze its bank accounts. Attacks, threats and unjustified imprisonment are also commonplace, especially in Russia, where more and more independent journalists are being forced to leave. This documentary meets activists in India, Russia and Poland, and questions, through their testimonies, the role of civil society and the future of democracy.
