Inspired by a true story, Skindeep captures the pain of everyday racism and reveals the broader context of how racial trauma is like a wound that will not heal and is subsequently re-inflicted generation after generation-it is a pain that lies beneath the surface for people of color in America, lying unrecognized, undefined, and untreated. The Skindeep film seeks to inspire people of color and allies to recognize, address, and engage in healing. It was an honor to work with Ingrid Silva, founder of @EmpowherNY on the Skindeep animated film. Racism as a form of trauma continues to be under-recognized in the mental health community. Sufferers often do not directly discuss experiences of racism with health care professionals, and these professionals often are not trained-nor do they seek to be trained-to grasp the significance of racial issues or experiences.
