Menna and her father, Farouq, have recently moved from North Africa to the the North of England, to an isolated seaside town with its identity built around a gothic novel. Menna is trying her best to adjust to their new home, but her father's reluctance to follow suit is making him even more isolated from British society and his daughter. The only way he can cling on to his culture is through old Egyptian movies that allow him to get lost in the nostalgia of home. Menna is far too distracted by new friends and wild attractions to feel the same, including her obsession with the novel, Dracula, which is synonymous to Whitby. Subsequently, the two of them are drifting further apart, at a time when they need each other the most. On Halloween night, the two finally have to confront their differences.
