Individuals with disabilities are often identified as a 'burden" to their family as well as to the society. The documentary film "THE CRUTCHES" is an attempt to present the small glimpse of the life stories of seven women with disabilities who all are affected by polio when they were born i.e., In the year between1970's to 90's and fought in each stage of their own lives to gain respect within their family and to get an identity in the society. Earlier, these women were no body in their family, they were never considered as a member of their family at all, they were not consulted for any of their family decisions and opinions. Now, they are the breadwinners of their families, these seven women have been working in Rehabilitation Aids Workshops by Women with Disability (RAWWD) which is located in Bangalore, some of them have been working there for more than 20 years. These women are using crutches and appliances for their mobility and they have trained themselves in making these mobility aids, appliances and supports to others like them i.e., disabled men, women and children. Today, these women with disabilities lend support too many and through their contribution to the persons with disability community, they became socially and financially independent. They became the role models and played a key role where other women with disabilities are getting inspired.
