Varus, give me back my legions. This sentence delivered to posterity is said to have been proclaimed by Emperor Augustus in Rome when he learned of the fall of three Roman legions in Germania. Around 15,000 elite soldiers had been lured into an ambush on the way back from the summer camp in 9 AD and were almost completely destroyed by the allied Germanic tribes under the leadership of Arminius the Cherusci. How could the well-equipped and trained legions of Rome be subjected so clearly by a savage band of barbarians? With the help of reenactment scenes, the military historian Marcus Junkelmann tries to trace the causes.
