The blind ex-commissioner Alexander Haller is familiar with kidnappings from his time as chief inspector in Vienna. When his sister Sophie is kidnapped while visiting the theater with his chauffeur Niko, Haller knows immediately: no police, because 50 percent of hostage-takings involving the police end fatally. Niko's suspicion that it could be about the 50,000 euros he owes the betting mafia turns out to be wrong. The hostage-takers Adrian and Caro are of a different caliber: They are demanding 750,000 euros and seem to be well informed about the Hallers. When the body of her accomplice is found, detective Laura Janda stumbles upon the case. Although she knows nothing about the kidnapping, she does know about Niko's bloody scuffle with the murdered man on the night of the crime. It is clear to the inspector that the convicted driver and Haller are hiding something. Nevertheless, at the request of her former boss, she initially stays out of the mysterious affair. Haller is determined to hand over the ransom as quickly and discreetly as possible, and in the meantime find out who he is dealing with. Meanwhile, bound Sophie tries to play her kidnappers off against each other.
