Tug (2016)

A Chinese-American girl and her white boyfriend fail to earn the blessing of the latter's racist parents in order to marry, but when he feels pressured to please them, they must see if a relationship is possible at all. When Nate reveals that once he tutored a student in poverty who regardless had serviceable parents, he's convinced marriage isn't necessary when being with someone you love, but Jen disagrees and declares him wrong for even dating her in the first place when he knew a relationship wasn't possible due to his fear of displeasing his parents. After a tug for the ring, Jen lets him have it, and walks out of his life.
