The (In)Dependent Spouse follows Sachi, an ambitious but shy 23 year-old Indian immigrant who strives to get her master's degree at an American university and go into genetic research in a lab there. Sachi had an arranged marriage with her husband Rohit, and came to the U.S. on a dependent spouse visa, which means she is financially dependent on him. She is also emotionally dependent on Rohit, allowing him to speak for her in social situations. Sachi is admitted to an American university because of her strong academic record, but she meets a racist professor there who will not consider her for a position in his research lab simply because she is an immigrant. Now, Sachi must prove her intelligence, not only to her professor but also to herself, by getting straight A's on all the professor's exams, a nearly impossible task.
