When Jennifer was little, Woody Allen came to her elementary school to pick kids to be in one of his movies. He didn't pick her. Now, years later, she catches the eye of bigshot movie director Cameron Crowe, whose casting director Gail is auditioning women to play bitter divorcees for his latest film. Desperate for a another shot at fame, Jennifer crash diets, squeezes into a girdle two sizes too small, and drives up to Hollywood-okay, Culver City-but by the time she gets there the girdle and the diet are taking their toll. She trudges onward, remembering Gail's "no second chances" tirade. To Jennifer's horror, she has to improv her lines, and when her turn comes, she chokes-literally. Humiliated, she burns the girdle and sinks into a depression fueled by junk food and television. Then, with one last gasp of hope, Jennifer summons the spirit of John Cusack and his giant boombox and calls Gail to beg for a part, any part. And that's when she knows for sure that she'll never be famous. But can she still find happiness?
