There's nothing more absurd than reality, and if you are looking for the absurd then the early Victorian period is a good place to start. An era of discovery, exploration and invention, where magic, religion and science often overlapped. Aristocrats and eccentrics vied for power and notoriety. Secret societies flourished. Seances, ghost hunting and more became common parlor games. This eccentricity also reached the criminal underworld giving us the infamous Jack The Ripper. But before Jack was another Jack, Spring Heeled Jack.
