Trapper Jean Maddane and his friend, Tom Wise, arrive in Placer, a town in the Pacific Northwest, where they learn that most of the area's timber land is owned by the ruthless Taggert, known as "The Wolf of Placer." The only person standing against Taggert is Ruth Shirley, who refuses to sell her land. When Jean observes one of Taggert's henchmen, Black Pete, trying to force himself on Ruth, he intervenes. Seeing Jean best Black Pete in a fight, Taggert decides to hire Jean as his camp foreman. Sometime later, after Black Pete is near death following a shooting accident, he warns Jean that Taggert has abducted Ruth because he secretly wants both her and her land. Jean then goes out into the woods and rescues Ruth from a pack of wolves, which then kill Taggert. Finally freed of the Wolf of Placer, Jean and Ruth find happiness together.
