The movie opens with Marilyn, an elderly homeless woman, pushing her shopping cart through the city of Los Angeles. By evening, she has returned to her encampment where she takes out her guitar and serenades her neighbors with a song about friendship and faith. Once done, her homeless friends beg her to do another song, but she refuses as she is quite tired from a day of scavenging. Her best friend, Andy, joins her for a sip of whiskey and conversation. We learn that Marilyn was once a celebrated musician who played at The Grand Ole Opry as a young woman. Andy notices a beautiful box in Marilyn's shanty and asks her about it. She initially refuses, but eventually pulls out the box and shows him what's inside - a beautiful golden egg which she calls her "keepsake." The next morning, Marilyn is off again, scavenging trash cans and playing her guitar in the park for donations. When she returns, she notices that her box has been opened and is now empty. She is devastated. The next morning, as she is packing up her cart, one of her dear friends from the encampment, Eddie, drops by and informs her that he has a job interview that day. They celebrate the news, after which Marilyn begins to push her cart off into the distance, leaving the encampment forever?
